The breastplate a vital part of medieval armor knight evolved significantly throughout the period initially as part of composite armor and later as a standalone piece. It transitioned from leather or bronze in antiquity to iron and then steel becoming a standard feature of plate armor by the late 14th century. For centuries chainmail (mail) was the dominant form of body protection with solid plates falling out of use around 1000 AD in Europe. Around 1220, plates started reappearing directly attached to a surcoat and evolved into the coat of plates by about 1250 which was popular for a century.
A notable early example the brigandine featured small metal plates riveted to a fabric or leather base providing a balance of protection and flexibility. True breastplates composed of wrought iron and later steel reappeared in Europe around 1340. Early breastplates were often made of several plates and only covered the upper torso with the lower torso lacking plate protection until the development of the Fauld around 1370. By 1365 evidence for one-piece breastplates emerged as depicted in an altarpiece in Pistoia Cathedral.
Over time breastplates became more refined with designs featuring outward-turned edges for stiffness and in some cases a ridge down the center for added strength. By the end of the 14th century full plate armor, covering the entire body was becoming common with the breastplate playing a crucial role in this evolution.Breastplates continued to evolve with variations in shape size and design reflecting the ongoing refinement of plate armor throughout the late medieval and early Renaissance periods.
The effectiveness of firearms gradually decreased the importance of plate armor as it became less effective against modern weaponry. The cost and weight of full plate armor also contributed to its decline particularly in infantry use. While plate armor largely disappeared in the 18th century the brigandine with its balance of protection and flexibility continued to be a popular choice in some contexts especially for scenarios like modern SCA and reenactment.
