German Breastplate 1450-1500

German breastplates specifically Gothic style plate armor emerged in the Holy Roman Empire during the 15th century characterized by sharp shape and vertical lines. German breastplates often made in two pieces and loosely riveted or strapped together allowed for a degree of body movement. Key centers of German armor production included Augsburg , Landshut and Nuremberg. At the turn of the 16th century German armorers transitioned from the Gothic style to the fuller more rounded “Maximilian style” characterized by decorative and structural fluting, which was introduced during the reign of Emperor Maximilian I.The support of the nobility spurred innovation in both the design and decoration of armor setting international standards.While relatively few early breastplates have survived examples can be found in collections like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the German Historical Museum in Berlin.
